Pass on the salt
It's open season on salt. Sodium - which makes up 40 percent of table salt - is a top food villain, according to latest studies, that looms large in processed foods. It's estimated that most people consume 3,000 to 5,000 milligrams per day - far more than the recommended daily limit of 2,400 mg, about one teaspoon.

Part-time moms hold sway for kids
Mothers who work part-time are more likely to have healthier children than those who are not working or work full- time, said a recent Australian study. They watched about an hour less television per week and had a healthier lifestyle, said the study's author, Jan Nicholson of Melbourne's Murdoch Childrens Research Institute.

Manage stress
Imagine this: you want to leave office on the dot to fetch your kid from school but your baby-boomer boss keeps holding meetings at 6pm. When you complain, he asks: "Where's your priority?" Then your subordinate, from the post- 80s generation, asks for permission to leave early because he's got a wine class to attend. You wonder: "Where's your priority?"

Make pressure workable
Is your boss a bully? Increasing pressures in the office are wreaking havoc with mental health, causing insomnia, loss of appetite and misery among workers.

Counting calories
Few common health words are as baffling to us as "calorie." Calories are invisible, yet we try to count them and cut them. Food supplies them, but they're not nutrients. "They're abstract," said Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition at New York University, who says calories are "a mess" to explain. "Ordinary mortals cannot count, see, taste, smell or feel one."

Kids workout
You go to the gym, so why shouldn't your children? Rolly Pollies, a fitness center catering to kids from six months to seven years, focuses on their physical development. Equipment is sized for pre- schoolers and customizable .

Mane event
Believe it or not, shiny hair starts at the racing tracks. Thirty years ago, horse trainer Roger Dunavant found that his shampoo had such amazing results on his charges that he tried it on his hair. He was so impressed with the results that he adapted it for humans.

Wrinkle buster
Sun, stress and pollution has the same aging effect on men's skin as on women's. But for men who think it's too sissy to pinch their womenfolk's skin- care products, there is always the macho Biotherm Homme Force Supreme.

Don't neglect the physical
Siu Yin's mother was very worried when she met the social worker. "My child has a very weak spine," the mother said. "To stand he has to lean against a wall for support. He is now four but still needs an adult to lead him up and down stairs. He cannot jump either. When I take him to the playground, he just stands or walks."

Sleep on it
What starts with an "s" that seniors need more of than younger adults, is great to get a bit of in the middle of the day and could cause teens to turn to drugs if they don't get enough of it? The answer is sleep, according to several studies presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Gas risk
Gas is the professional cook's energy of choice for frying a steak but it may be more harmful for health compared to using electricity, doctors said in a study released late last week. The reason: gas cooking at high temperatures may release more of the fumes that have been rated as "probably carcinogenic" by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
