Income top-ups offer new path to homes for all
In the early 1990s, the mainland government sold to current and former government employees and employees of state- owned enterprises, at very low prices, housing that it had been letting to them at nominal rents.

Tree grates must go
I appreciate Peter Chu's letter "Going to grate pains," (The Standard, July 17) on tree-killer gratings. In Tai Po, along the Lam Tsuen River and at the junction of Ting Kok and On Chee roads, there are many of these "killers." Something must be done about them.

Pollution solutions
Air pollution levels in Hong Kong are much too high and I want to make a difference. I would like to see more advertisements and articles about air quality in Hong Kong. Even posters with quick facts and pictures of the causes of air pollution - such as power plants - would help.

When to call it quits
Recent proposals to adjust the retirement age for civil servants have been controversial. Some people might reckon that as the average life expectancy of Hongkongers increases, the retirement age should be extended to 65. Experienced civil servants could then serve the public longer and prevent a shortage in the civil service. However, not everyone over 60 is fit enough to properly perform their duties, which can be rather demanding physically and mentally.

Give help on property
Regarding the letter "Leave market alone," (The Standard, August 24). Letter writer Joe Yen bought his first property in 2005 and sold it earlier this year - obviously he made money and now knows he made a mistake so is asking the government not to interfere.

Autopay anger
These days big businesses in Hong Kong are anything but ethical in dealing with customers.

Direct rage elsewhere
I am a Filipino-Canadian who is outraged by the killing of the Hong Kong citizens, including three who held Canadian passports. I condemn the act of the mad hostage-taker. I condemn the action of the police whose blunders wasted so many precious lives. I am outraged by the weak leadership of the new president and his administration.

Praying for forgiveness
To Mrs Leung: there are no words to express my deepest sadness at the loss you suffered.

Who fired first?
The first shot triggered the tragedy, but who fired it?
